In modern western culture, CST came out of the practice of osteopathy and the teachings of Dr. William Garner Sutherland. Dr. Sutherland was struck by the anatomy of the cranial bones and their apparent design for subtle movement. He defined the craniosacral system as the dura (connective tissue surrounding the central nervous system), the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), and the directly connected bony and ligamentous structures.

Through his practice, he became aware of subtle movements in the craniosacral system driven by pulsatory rhythmic pressures in the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding and supporting the nervous system. Because the whole body is a fabric of connection, our whole system rises and swells with this rhythmic pressure and then recedes and narrows.

It is when these rhythms change or get stuck that we can start running into problems. Because craniosacral therapy is affecting the brain and nervous system, it has the ability to affect the whole body. Patients with sleep disorders, anxiety, autoimmune issues, inflammatory issues, pain, chronic pain, hormone imbalances, gut problems, and many other health-related issues have all found help using craniosacral therapy!
